The Confederation of African Football, CAF, on Tuesday announced the postponement of all CAF qualifiers for the FIFA world cup in Qatar scheduled to be played in June 2021, Afriksportsmagazf can report.

This is contained in a press statement released by the African football governing body today.

 

It reads; “The CAF Emergency Committee in consultation with FIFA decided to postpone the CAF Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 that were due to be played in June 2021 after taking into consideration the current challenges caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, and need to ensure the optimal playing condition for all participating teams. The qualifiers will now take place in the existing windows of September,October and November, 2021 and March 2022.

“CAF is reassessing its protocols and processes to enhance the implementation of COVID-related protocols, including specifically focusing on pre-match testing which had been the source of some challenges in previous windows,” the statement continued

This means that the Super Eagles 2022 World Cup qualifiers slated for June against Liberia and Cape Verde have been postponed.

Nigeria was due to start her Qatar 2022 World Campaign on June 5th with a home match against Liberia and an away game against Cape Verde six days later.

However, the matches have been postponed to September.

The coach Gernot Rohr-led Eagles are drawn against Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia in Group C of the qualifiers.

Since qualifying for her maiden World Cup in USA 1994, Super Eagles have played all but one edition of the competition. The team missed out in 2006 edition held in Germany.

Nigeria lost the qualifying ticket to Angola.
