The junior Teranga Lions emerged winners of the TotalEnergies U20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2023 after a 2-0 victory over neighbours Gambia on Saturday, at the Cairo International Stadium.
At the end of a perfect run, Senegal overcame Gambia and won the trophy for the first time in history.
Malick Daf’s pals dominated coach Abdoulie Bojang’s players in the earlier on in the game. A magnificent cross from Amidou Diop saw Souleymane Faye place an unstoppable header which gifted Senegal the lead in the 6th minute of play.
Mamadou Lamine Camara doubled the advantage in the 55th minute from a corner, and that was that as The Gambia found it hard to cope.
Senegal won all of their six matches played, and scored 14 goals in the process. The Senegalese defense did not concede a single goal in the tournament, making them the best defense and the best attack of the competition.
Pape Demba Diop won the Golden Boot after finishing top scorer with 5 goals. Lamine Camara the new Metz recruit was named best player of the competition, a clean sweep for Senegal with individual distinctions.
