Qatar2022WC: Walid Regragui becomes first-ever African coach to reach quarter-finals

47 year- old Morocco male national football head trainer Walid Regragui, has become the first-ever African coach to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

This was after a heroic and ground breaking victory against Spain on a 3-0 score, through penalty shootouts, after both sides had played a 0-0 tie.

Morocco’s Yassine Bounou made three crucial saves, in the penalty shootout against Spain in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 round of 16 match, at the Education City Stadium.

On 32 August, Regragui was appointed as the new head coach for the Morocco national football team, after the sacking of former head coach Vahid Halilhodzic.

On 21,September 2022,the former AC Ajaccio and Racing Santander player, coached the Atlas lions in his first friendly game, which ended in a 1-0 victory against Madagascar.

Walid has succeeded in imposing his trade marks, in the ongoing 22nd edition of the Qatari world soccer Jamboree by recording historic wins against Canada by (2-1), Belgium ( 2-0) and Spain (3-0).

After retiring as player, Regragui began with football coaching, as assistant of Morocco’s national team in September 2012.When the head coach Rachid Taoussi was sacked on October 1 , 2013,his contract was also terminated.

Appointed as head coach of Wydad Athletic of Casablanca on May 30,2022,he led the tier to emerge winners of the CAF Champions League by beating the Egyptian football giant Al Ahly in the final.

He became the only second Moroccan trainer to win the African Champions League, after Hussein Ammouta with Wydad AC in 2017.
